dc.description.abstractA presente pesquisa trata-se de um estudo de caso acerca da fundação da Igreja Batista Independente do Garcia com o objetivo de compreender como se deu o processo de educação, autonomia e intelectualidade negra nesta instituição, no período entre 1910-1930, na cidade de Salvador, visto serem seus fundadores um grupo de negros. A fim de compreender as origens e trajetórias dos fundadores desta congregação, buscou-se, especialmente no acervo da referida instituição, documentação histórica que auxiliasse a (re)construir essas histórias e trazê-las à tona. Assim, observou-se a necessidade de se ter um olhar multidisciplinar para compreender estes homens e mulheres a partir do contexto sócio-histórico no qual estavam inseridos, o pós-abolição da escravatura. Segundo a literatura especializada, esses negros transitavam entre o Catolicismo Romano e as Religiões de Matriz Africana. Entretanto, com a chegada de missionários estadunidenses na capital baiana, no final do século XIX, certa parcela dessa população passa a professar uma nova fé (Protestante). Ao longo da pesquisa, notou-se que o período em questão proporcionou diversos desafios para os fundadores da Igreja Batista do Garcia, entretanto, também forjou o caráter de seus fundadores de modo a fazê-los rejeitar os moldes e a mentalidade escravagista, especialmente na relação com os missionários brancos estrangeiros. Deste modo, pôde-se perceber o histórico protagonismo da população negro na memória da História do Protestantismo na Bahia, ainda que, muitas vezes, estes atores sejam invisibilizados.pt_BR
dc.description.abstract2This research is a case study about the foundation of the Baptist Church Independent of Garcia with the objective of understanding how the process of education, autonomy and black intellectuality took place in this institution, in the period 1910-1930, in the city of Salvador, since its founders are a group of blacks. In order to understand the origins and trajectories of the founders of this congregation, we sought, especially in the collection of the referred institution, historical documentation that would help to (re)construct these stories and bring them to the surface. Thus, there was a need to have a multidisciplinary look to understand these men and women from the sociohistorical context in which they were inserted, the post-abolition of slavery. According to the specialized literature, these blacks moved between Roman Catholicism and religions of African descent. However, with the arrival of American missionaries in the capital of Bahia, at the end of the 19th century, a certain portion of this population started to profess a new faith (Protestant). Throughout the research, it was noted that the period in question provided several challenges for the founders of the Baptist Church of Garcia, however, it also forged the character of its founders in order to make them reject the molds and the slavery mentality, especially in the relationship with foreign white missionaries. In this way, it was possible to perceive the historic role of the black people in the memory of the History of Protestantism in Bahia, even though, many times, these actors are invisible.
