| dc.description.abstract | Neste estudo, objetiva-se analisar se e como as seções de leitura do livro didático New English File (OXEDEN; LATHAM-KOENIG; SELIGSON, 1997), nos níveis iniciante, préintermediário, intermediário e intermediário avançado, utilizado nas aulas de laboratório instrumental de língua inglesa do curso de Letras/Inglês de uma universidade pública do interior da Bahia, oferecem oportunidades para os alunos lerem, ouvirem e discutirem sobre os Englishes que representam as variedades de inglês presentes em uma realidade que o tem como língua internacional. Esta pesquisa tem por base o paradigma kachruviano e discute-se temas como inteligibilidade, identidades, ensino de inglês, uso de materiais didáticos no Brasil e imperialismo linguístico. São analisadas todas as seções de leitura dos livros-textos, sendo avaliada a presença dos países dos três círculos kachruvianos nos textos, com ênfase ao Brasil. Aponta-se a importância do ensino de world Englishes para estudantes que serão futuros professores de inglês, para que estes possam construir o respeito às identidades e o conhecimento destas variedades com suas implicações linguísticas, sociais, culturais e políticas. Concluiu-se, nesta pesquisa, que, nas seções de leitura, os países do Círculo Interno, principalmente Estados Unidos e Reino Unido, tem um papel mais significativo do que os países do Círculo Externo e em Expansão | pt_BR |
| dc.description.abstract2 | In this study, Reading Sections of the textbook New English File (OXEDEN; LATHAMKOENIG; SELIGSON 1997) are analyzed at the beginner, pre-intermediate, intermediate, and upper intermediate levels. These textbooks are used in the English classes at a public university in the state of Bahia, Brazil. This study aims to analyze if and how the Reading Sections provide opportunities of reading and discussion about ‘Englishes’ which represent the varieties of English presented in a context where it is an international language. This research is based on the kachruvian paradigm and some issues are discussed, like: intelligibility, identity, English teaching, usage of school material in Brazil and linguistic imperialism. It evaluates the presence of the countries from the three kachruvian circles in the texts, with a special focus onBrazil. It is pointed out that studying and understanding world Englishes is important for the students involved in the study as they will be future English teachers. For this reason, they need to provide respect for different identities and have knowledge about these varieties of English with their linguistic, social, cultural and political implications. It was concluded that the Inner Circle countries, mainly the United States and the United Kingdom, have more significant coverage than the countries of the Outer and Expanding Circles in the texts of the course books.
