| dc.description.abstract | Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar como os temas da ciência, da religião e da dualidade humana são explorados no romance O Médico e o Monstro (1996), de Robert Louis Stevenson, analisando de que maneira esses elementos refletem as características e contradições da sociedade vitoriana. A obra emerge diretamente do contexto histórico, social e cultural do período, marcado pelos avanços científicos e pelas tensões religiosas que coexistiam com um moralismo rígido voltado à preservação das aparências de virtudes. A sociedade vitoriana vivia profundas transformações, nas quais o progresso científico frequentemente colidia com os valores religiosos dominantes. No romance, o protagonista Dr. Jekyll encarna o cientista vitoriano que busca transcender os limites impostos pela moralidade, utilizando a ciência como ferramenta para explorar a natureza humana. No entanto, ao criar Mr. Hyde, ele revela o lado reprimido e instintivo do ser humano, expondo como a tentativa de separar o bem e o mal é inevitavelmente fadada ao fracasso. Desse modo, este estudo adota uma abordagem bibliográfica, com ênfase na análise de conteúdo da obra literária. Autores como Hermes e Decarli (2016), Vasconcelos e Melo (2019), Souza e Rossi (2016), entre outros, servem como base teórica para fundamentar este trabalho. Conclui-se que Stevenson (1996) utiliza a dualidade entre Jekyll e Hyde para evidenciar as tensões entre ciência, moralidade e repressão que permeavam a sociedade vitoriana, revelando como tais contradições continuam relevantes para reflexões contemporâneas sobre ciência, ética, identidade e a complexidade da condição humana. | |
| dc.description.abstract2 | This work aims to investigate how the themes of science, religion, and human duality are explored in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1996), analyzing how these elements reflect the characteristics and contradictions of Victorian society. The work emerges directly from the historical, social, and cultural context of the period, marked by scientific advances and religious tensions that coexisted with a rigid moralism focused on preserving the appearance of virtue. Victorian society was undergoing profound transformations, in which scientific progress frequently clashed with dominant religious values. In the novel, the protagonist Dr. Jekyll embodies the Victorian scientist who seeks to transcend the limits imposed by morality, using science as a tool to explore human nature. However, in creating Mr. Hyde, he reveals the repressed and instinctive side of human beings, exposing how the attempt to separate good and evil is inevitably doomed to failure. Thus, this study adopts a bibliographical approach, with an emphasis on the content analysis of the literary work. Authors such as Hermes and Decarli (2016), Vasconcelos and Melo (2019), Souza and Rossi (2016), among others, serve as the theoretical basis for this work. It is concluded that Stevenson (1996) uses the duality between Jekyll and Hyde to highlight the tensions between science, morality, and repression that permeated Victorian society, revealing how such contradictions remain relevant for contemporary reflections on science, ethics, identity, and the complexity of the human condition. | |
