| dc.description.abstract | Este trabalho analisa o conto A Queda da Casa de Usher (2021), de Edgar Allan Poe, sob uma perspectiva crítica, social e simbólica, buscando compreender de que modo a narrativa expressa as tensões culturais, econômicas e morais da sociedade norte-americana do século XIX. A justificativa do estudo reside na pertinência da literatura gótica como instrumento de reflexão sobre dilemas históricos e sociais que ultrapassam seu tempo de produção. O objetivo consiste em interpretar o conto como alegoria da decadência moral e da alienação resultantes das transformações estruturais da modernidade emergente. A análise fundamenta-se nas perspectivas teóricas de Antônio Cândido (2006), Karl Marx (2014) e Max Weber (2003), que permitem compreender a mansão Usher e seus habitantes como símbolos da crise das estruturas sociais, econômicas e culturais da época. Metodologicamente, adotou-se uma abordagem qualitativa e interpretativa, com análise literária, sociológica e simbólica da obra, relacionando seus elementos góticos e fantásticos ao contexto histórico do século XIX. Os resultados indicam que Poe não apenas constrói uma narrativa marcada pelo horror e pela atmosfera de ruína, mas também denuncia, de forma alegórica, a desintegração subjetiva e social de uma época em transição. Assim, o estudo reforça que a literatura gótica ultrapassa o entretenimento estético e constitui importante ferramenta crítica para compreender fragilidades e contradições presentes tanto no século XIX quanto na contemporaneidade. | |
| dc.description.abstract2 | This paper analyzes Edgar Allan Poe’s short story, The Fall of the House of Usher (2021), from a critical, social, and symbolic perspective, seeking to understand how the narrative expresses the cultural, economic, and moral tensions of 19th-century North American society. The study is justified by the relevance of Gothic literature as an instrument for reflection on historical and social dilemmas that transcend their time of production. The objective is to interpret the short story as an allegory of the moral decadence and alienation resulting from the structural transformations of emerging modernity. The analysis is grounded in the theoretical perspectives of Antônio Cândido (2006), Karl Marx (2014), and Max Weber (2003), which allow for an understanding of the Usher mansion and its inhabitants as symbols of the crisis within the social, economic, and cultural structures of the era. Methodologically, a qualitative and interpretive approach was adopted, utilizing literary, sociological, and symbolic analysis to relate the work’s Gothic and fantastic elements to the 19th-century historical context. The results indicate that Poe not only constructs a narrative marked by horror and an atmosphere of ruin but also allegorically denounces the subjective and social disintegration of an epoch in transition. Thus, the study reinforces that Gothic literature goes beyond aesthetic entertainment, constituting an important critical tool for understanding the fragilities and contradictions present in both the 19th century and contemporary times. | |
