| dc.description.abstract | Este trabalho examina a modernização promovida pela Companhia Hidrelétrica do São Francisco (CHESF) como eixo estruturante das transformações históricas, culturais e materiais na região de Paulo Afonso. A partir de meados do século XX, a atuação da empresa introduziu tecnologias e racionalidades industriais que remodelaram profundamente a paisagem do Rio São Francisco, desencadeando processos de globalização nos quais saberes e práticas locais foram reinterpretados, incorporados ou tensionados pela nova ordem técnica em implantação. A Cachoeira de Paulo Afonso, antes celebrada como força natural e símbolo do sertão, foi integrada ao projeto nacional de desenvolvimento energético, adquirindo novos significados tanto no imaginário regional quanto no discurso estatal. Esse movimento converteu a área em um espaço híbrido, onde elementos tradicionais e práticas tecnológicas avançadas passaram a coexistir e a influenciar-se mutuamente. Metodologicamente, a pesquisa fundamenta-se em bibliografia especializada em livros e artigos produzidos por autores dedicados à temática, embora ainda constituam um conjunto relativamente reduzido, oferecem suporte teórico-metodológico sólido para a análise proposta. A opção por essa abordagem documental e interpretativa, articulada ao campo da Arqueologia Histórica, mostra-se fundamental para ampliar a compreensão sobre a região e sobre os processos de transformação que a moldaram ao longo do tempo. Sob essa perspectiva, o estudo investiga como a cultura material produzida pela CHESF (usinas, estruturas industriais, equipamentos, edificações e paisagens transformadas) permite compreender não apenas a modernização física, mas também seus impactos sociais, simbólicos e ambientais. A análise da paisagem cultural, que engloba a Usina Angiquinho, o complexo hidrelétrico e os vestígios das diferentes fases de trabalho, evidencia como esses elementos foram incorporados à memória e à identidade locais, ao mesmo tempo em que revelam conflitos, resistências e negociações diante do avanço tecnológico. No século XXI, a região consolidou-se como patrimônio natural e cultural, tornando-se foco de turismo e de debates sobre preservação. A arqueologia oferece, assim, uma leitura crítica dessas dinâmicas, iluminando os processos de mudança que moldaram o sertão nordestino e destacando o papel central da modernização energética na reconfiguração do território e das formas de vida social. | |
| dc.description.abstract2 | This paper examines the modernization promoted by the São Francisco Hydroelectric Company (CHESF) as a structuring axis of historical, cultural, and material transformations in the Paulo Afonso region. From the mid-20th century onward, the company's activities introduced technologies and industrial rationalities that profoundly reshaped the landscape of the São Francisco River, triggering globalization processes in which local knowledge and practices were reinterpreted, incorporated, or challenged by the new technical order being implemented. The Paulo Afonso Waterfall, once celebrated as a natural force and symbol of the hinterlands, was integrated into the national energy development project, acquiring new meanings both in the regional imagination and in state discourse. This movement turned the area into a hybrid space, where traditional elements and advanced technological practices began to coexist and influence each other. Methodologically, the research is based on bibliographies in books and articles produced by authors dedicated to the subject. Although still relatively limited, they provide solid theoretical and methodological support for the proposed analysis. The choice of this documentary and interpretive approach, articulated with the field of Historical Archaeology, proves fundamental to broadening the understanding of the region and the transformation processes that have shaped it over time. From this perspective, the study investigates how the material culture produced by CHESF (plants, industrial structures, equipment, buildings, and transformed landscapes) allows for the understanding not only of physical modernization but also of its social, symbolic, and environmental impacts. The analysis of the cultural landscape, which encompasses the Angiquinho Plant, the hydroelectric complex, and the remnants of different phases of work, demonstrates how these elements have been incorporated into memory and identity, while also revealing conflicts, resistances, and negotiations in the face of technological advancement. In the 21st century, the region established itself as a natural and cultural heritage site, becoming a focus of tourism and debates about preservation. Archaeology thus provides a critical reading of these dynamics, illuminating the processes of change that have shaped the northeastern hinterland and highlighting the central role of energy modernization in the reconfiguration of the territory and social ways of life. | |
