| dc.description.abstract2 | In MATAS DO SERTÃO DE BAIXO, Isaías Alves, a prominent educator and one of Brazil's greatest, delves into his birthplace in Bahia. He examines this part of the land in all dimensions relevant to both the scholar and the native, encompassing "the native soil: on the surface and in tradition." He explores it historically and sentimentally, detailing its social life and memorable moments, and tracing families that endure and men who have long departed. As a pedagogue (master of masters) and founder of the Faculty of Philosophy—which significantly enhanced the University of Bahia—the illustrious polygraph sought to compile some of his region's history in this book.
